Joey smiled at his giggling daughter, bouncing her on his knee carefully. He looked into her big eyes, one of them light brown, one hazel with a hint of blue.Josephine had Heterochromia,so she had to have been tested for eye problems early on,but her eyes were perfectly fine. No,he corrected himself,They're beautiful. The nice thing about living in California was that you could be at the beach during the Christmas season. The man watched as the clear blue water lapped against the tan sand of the coast.
He started to sing to the child,"Sleigh bells ring, are you listenin'?"...Then the four month year old wiggled her way out of his grasp and started crawling towards the sea.Joseph,of course not being one to leave small children to their own devices in rather large areas, when chasing after her.Raising one child was hard but raising two was even harder but raising two little vampires children was even harder than that.In fact,if one were measure the difficulty of raising children,by multiplying the financial cost by the time investment by the sleep lost by the....well all those inexplicable things kids did,one would realize the pros of "waiting until marriage" far out weighed the consequences of "being uncool".
Anyway, when the most-certainly-not-sparkling vampire was had caught up to the child,he realized she was chewing on something...no wait someone! He grabbed kid and started running as fast as he could until he reached the high ground of the beach and tripped.

But more wonderful than the lore of old men and the lore of books is the secret lore of ocean.

((What time of the day is it?))
The water felt cool and sensational, as it always did to the merman. His muscles were relaxed, letting himself float a little beneath the surface of the water. The darkness of his skin helped him blend with the dark shadows of the water. That was, until he found himself floating in the shallow area, but he was allowing himself to ignore that fact. He probably looked like a giant fish from a bit away, so most people should stay away from him. Should. Key word there. He was lost in thoughts of Saeleen. The lovely woman he had met out in the forest that night. He might have called it a fateful night if he was into that sort of description. Was she? He wanted to know. It was so confusing not wanting to rip someone's throat out for once.
Something brought him out of his reverie, something so very minor it was really just barely noticeable at first, but after a few short moments it became irritating enough, or at least curious enough, for him to bend down and glance at his tail. The tip of his tail was being nibbled on by a small child, a little girl that could not have been but a few months old. What she was doing anywhere near the water was beyond him, but suddenly his instincts started kicking in. He beared his sharp teeth beneath the water and jerked his tail away, but before he could do anything, the little girl was snatched up out of the water by a man, assumedly her father. Who else would risk getting eaten by a big fish to save a child?
He lashed out furiously, barely missing the running feet of the man before him, but he did not get completely out of the water. No, now he was halfway out of the water, his torso lying in the wet sand with the water rushing up around him with the tide. He hissed angrily, black eyes boring into the two who had so luckily escaped his grasp. His tail flickered up out of the water. Still hissing, he was giving warning. He had half a mind to give chase when the man tripped, but for the moment he was not sure how many people were around, and certainly how many people were within shouting distance. The last thing he needed was another platoon of men trying to spear him through.

(Midday) Joseph could have sworn time had slowed as the ...merman/fishman/? arose. His heart pounded and he started to feel his body heat him when the merman looked at him and...hissed? He thought back to Jason and wondered if this was a new trend.I liked the pet rocks better! ,he thought in panic. The man was relieved that that was all the guy wanted to do at this time.
"Sorry about that, you know how kids can be." He took his kid and walked away, realizing that there wasn't anyone else there which made him move all the faster.
