[[Large periods of time will be skipped,so assume there would be more here than there is]]
[[text here]]=OOC notes

Next year my mother will let me change schools.I hate it here,Ms.Vermet is always forcing me into a stupid dunce cap or using that rod on me.What's worse is that she tells my mother I am either stupid or badly behaved but she can't tell which.Let me get this straight,I am not a bad kid! I try to pay attention, but it's just somehow a fruitless endeavor.I've asked Mamma and she says I was never hit with an idiot-stick and that Vermet should button her lips, after all I was one of the first children in my town to learn to read.Even my sister hates the old shrew.Even if I do have to walk a mile to school,it is worth it to be rid of her.
[[Joseph has ADHD which nobody knew about back then.]]

The teacher here,Ms.Liliana Sky is much more understanding than Ms.Vermet ever was.She says she had the same trouble when she was young and is patient and kind to me.She is also kind of pretty with green eyes and blonde hair, although she does have a gap in her front teeth. Many people are rude to her because they object to her being a Quaker thinking that means she's loose.I think folks around here just enjoy gossip, after all I don't even know what religion most of this town is.We have a church and I heard a visitor mutter something about non-denominational protestants,so I assume he was talking about us.
December 4,1873
My grandmother has come to live with us,she is certainly not what I expected. She always has her hands in someone else's pockets for starters and often serves as the devil on the shoulder's of my sister and I,but mostly my sister who actually listens to her.I also have to scatter fake keys and hide this journal in a locked box under my bed so she will cease reading it.The good news however is that we are receiving money from an uncle I never heard to put up with her,the better news is that she finally helped me get back at an old nemesis.
You see,she plays poker with Vermet every Sunday it seemed like a bad thing at first,at least until I figured out how to make those Sundays something to look forward to.I have taken to making casual trips near their games and forcing myself to memorize Ms.Vermet's hands of cards.I asked my grandmother what she'd be willing to do if it meant defeating her rival, she say through my bluff and said she'd give me 2 dollars a week and candy if I helped her to win those games she had tried and failed to cheat at so many times,I of course agreed.
I am happy to report that my grandmother of questionable character wins every game against that old biddy,I have saved up 24 dollars. This is a good arrangement for all, except Vermet, of course whose unhappy, shriveled face is just icing on the cake.Whose a mooncalf now,you old hag? I think I am growing rather fond of my grandmother...
June 20,1880
I have passed the oral test and I am now done with school.I shall now become an apprentice to Mr.Jones, the local clockmaker.I am excited for I have always taken pleasure in tinkering with the inter-workings of objects. My grandmother has been missing for five months and we now figure she got up and left, after all her pipe, cards, crude joke book, vodka, rubber unidentified object(mostly because no one wants to touch it),ratty old ball of what appears to be yarn and her hat are also missing.
[[By the next entry he's no longer an apprentice but a paid worker, and the term Native American didn't exist back then.]]
February 3rd,1887
I met the most unusual woman in the shop today, she is a Indian for starters and amazingly tall, I am six feet tall and she stands a head over me.Her height though is rather fetching and after talking to her I realized she is quite intelligent and interesting. Her name's Hannah and she's an interpreter, she speaks Cheyenne,Lakota,English(of course) and Cherokee.
April 5th,1887
I now know I want to be more than friends with Hannah so I wrote this
Iron will and skin of bronze
Tall and graceful like a swan
Raven hair and topaz stare
Strong of mind and lovely heart
I think I loved you from the start
I also wrote that I meant every word and if I ran away it was only because I was nervous and to tell me if she felt the same way.
April 6th,1887
Hannah called me and said she also loved me and would be honored if I would be her gentleman caller, her only gentlemen caller. She also asked if I knew exactly what we would have to go through if we wanted to be together,I told her I did not but would be very willing to go through it.I do not care about the color of her skin,I love her race and all. Most women strive to seem flimsy and delicate,Hannah does not care to pretend to be those things, she has grit(although this frequently turns into stubbornness),intelligence and a good heart.
